Announcement Overview
Hamilton Mountain – MPP Monica Ciriello along with Raymond Cho, Minister for Seniors and Accessibility today announced that Ontario is investing in Neighbour to Neighbour’s Seniors Community Grant project.
This is a part of Ontario’s $7 million investment to protect seniors and older adults by supporting over 320 community projects that help them to stay fit, active, healthy and socially connected.
“Today’s announcement in Hamilton is about helping seniors across the province, stay active, connected, and engaged in their community. Through the Seniors Community Grant Program, Neighbour to Neighbour, right here in Hamilton, will expand programs that reduce social isolation, promote healthy aging, and create meaningful opportunities for older adults to build friendships and a sense of belonging,” said Monica Ciriello, Member of Provincial Parliament for Hamilton Mountain. “I want to thank Minister Raymond Cho and the Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility for their continued partnership and commitment to supporting seniors across Hamilton and Ontario.”
“This investment is about more than funding programs, it is about investing in people. At Neighbour to Neighbour we know that when seniors have meaningful opportunities to connect, volunteer, learn, and participate in their community, everyone benefits,” said Barrington Hector, Executive Director at Neighbour to Neighbour Centre. “We are grateful for the Province’s support and excited to continue creating meaningful opportunities that help older adults build community and connection right here in Hamilton.”
Neighbour to Neighbour will reduce social isolation and improve wellness and health for older adults through inclusive food-based programming. Their program will expand the impact of their successful inter-cultural and inter-generational kitchen sessions and pilot a weekly older-adult focused breakfast. These activities will foster social connection, and health education, benefiting low-income, food insecure, and newcomer seniors, while promoting mental and physical well-being.
Seniors Community Grants projects are designed to increase independence, reduce social isolation and create positive connections.
“I am delighted to make this announcement at Neighbour to Neighbour here in Hamilton. Our government shares your commitment to protect our seniors’ health and well-being and ensure they have access to inclusive and reliable community supports,” said Raymond Cho, Minister for Seniors and Accessibility. “The Seniors Community Grant Program is a critical lifeline throughout the province for seniors to learn new skills, get fit, enjoy group activities and stay connected to their friends and neighbours.”
SCG recipients can receive up to $25,000 to support local programs, services and events to provide seniors with opportunities for greater social inclusion, volunteerism and community engagement.
Today’s announcement highlights one of the many programs and services available to support the needs of seniors in Ontario.
